About me

Portrait of Sander van 't Veer

I'm a senior Android developer. My Android journey began in 2011, and since 2020 I've worked on mobile apps for organizations such as Nederlandse Loterijen, Common Caretakers and the Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport. I combine deep knowledge of Kotlin and the Android SDK with hands-on experience in accessibility and user experience, across both brownfield and greenfield projects. I'm well-versed in MVVM/MVI and Clean Architecture, and experienced with tools such as Firebase, Azure Pipelines and Figma.

My clients have ranged from local businesses to large corporations and government, and my work from greenfield Jetpack Compose apps to legacy code migrations. I pick up new technologies quickly, have done some backend and web work over the years, and keep improving my skills.

I've worked in many different teams and roles, and I'm used to multidisciplinary teams in dynamic environments. I'm just as comfortable leading: I have a leading role in the Android development for Nederlandse Loterijen, ran the whole technical side of NoFoodWasted as CTO, and led Gemoro's development team in Romania. In every team I take ownership, communicate clearly, and contribute to technical direction, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Where I've worked

Nov 2020 – Present

Senior Android Developer at Dawn Technology (Previously Egeniq)

Dec 2021 – Present

Nederlandse Loterijen

Leading day-to-day support and development of all customer-facing Android apps: multi-brand apps from a shared codebase (Staatsloterij, Eurojackpot) plus new apps built from scratch (Krasloten, Toto). Drove WCAG accessibility compliance across the portfolio and optimized performance during peak load (New Year's Eve draw).

Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, XML/ViewBinding, MVVM, RxJava, Coroutines, Hilt, Moshi, Retrofit, Auth0, Braze SDK, Azure Pipelines, Fastlane, JUnit, MockK, Robolectric

Aug 2025 – Present

Common Caretakers

Maintaining and evolving the GetEduroam and Govroam Android app, used by students and staff worldwide to access the Eduroam network, and by Dutch government organizations via Govroam. Implemented WorkManager for periodic local notifications, added protection against app hibernation, and improved stability for a global user base.

Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Compose Destinations, SQLDelight, WorkManager, WifiNetworkSuggestion API, Passpoint, OAuth 2.0, Hilt, Firebase Crashlytics

Nov 2020 – Dec 2021

Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport

Contributed to CoronaCheck, CoronaMelder, and GGD Contact, the Android apps supporting the Dutch government's COVID-19 response. Handled sensitive personal data securely in local storage, generated and read encrypted QR codes, and safeguarded usability and accessibility for as broad a user base as possible.

Earlier career

  1. 2014 – 2020

    Chief Technology Officer at NoFoodWasted

Led the technical side of NoFoodWasted, a non-profit working to reduce food waste in the Netherlands: the Android apps, the backend, the infrastructure and the development team, plus creative input on the iOS app. Took the apps from concept to rollout and beyond. The consumer app showed discounted meals at restaurants and products at supermarkets in real time, and let people buy them in advance. A separate management app served the participating retailers: supermarkets, restaurants, greengrocers and bakeries. Also built and maintained the backend systems and management dashboards that kept the platform running. The platform grew to around 250 participating retailers and 50,000 users.

    Java, PHP

  2. 2014 – 2020

Lead Android Developer at Gemoro Mobile Media, Tilburg

Developed and maintained numerous native Android apps for Gemoro and its clients, including Avans Hogeschool, Eneco, the Nationale Zorgnummer and Beursvloer Tilburg, along with the backend services that kept them running. Also set up narrowcasting and Bluetooth marketing campaigns. Led Gemoro's external development team of four in Romania: assigned work, reviewed code, took on overall team-lead duties and occasionally managed the team on site.

    Java, PHP

  3. 2012 – 2017

    Android Developer at Mobowski

Took the white-label framework from the internship into production and kept expanding it for several years: maintained existing features, added new technical capabilities and improved performance for a worldwide audience. More than 300 apps were built and shipped on it.

  4. 2013

Intern at TASS Technology Solutions (Altran)

Developed an Android app to control a Philips Hue smart lighting system before official developer support existed. The work included reverse engineering the protocol between the phone and the Hue hardware, and rapid prototyping.

  5. 2011 – 2012

    Intern at Mobowski, Dordrecht

Created a prototype Android framework for white-label apps, based on the company's existing iOS framework. Customers could assemble their own apps from individual modules, with features such as media playback and aggregated content, all managed through an external content management system. The internship also included some early web design and development work.
